Anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders are common mental health conditions characterized by intense, persistent, unreasonable fear, which results in significant distress. In Canada, including Ontario, these disorders have a considerable impact on the population (1).

The different forms of anxiety disorders

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): People with GAD experience excessive and chronic anxiety, even for no apparent reason. They may therefore feel constantly worried, tense and have difficulty controlling their worries.
  • Panic disorder: Individuals with this disorder experience acute and intense panic attacks. These attacks are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as palpitations, shortness of breath and heavy sweating.
  • Specific Phobias: Phobias are intense, irrational fears of particular objects, situations, or animals. This may include fear of spiders, heights, enclosed spaces, etc.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: This disorder is characterized by extreme fear of social situations and negative evaluation from others. Sufferers may therefore be afraid of speaking in public, meeting new people or participating in social activities.

Anxiety disorders can have negative consequences on the affected person as well as those around them. They can lead to a deterioration in quality of life, relationship difficulties, lower self-esteem and reduced academic or professional performance.

Find help

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): CBT is an effective treatment approach for anxiety disorders. It aims to identify and modify thoughts and behaviors related to anxiety, allowing individuals to acquire new strategies to cope with their worries.
  • Medications: In some cases, doctors may prescribe medications to relieve anxiety symptoms. These medications include antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and mood stabilizers.
  • Stress Management: Adopting stress management techniques such as relaxation, deep breathing, regular exercise and time management can help reduce anxiety levels.

It is essential to seek professional help for the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders. Resources such as mental health professionals and community organizations can provide valuable support.
