Erase your tracks

Browsing without a trace online

In future, we recommend using private browsing. In this way, the history of pages consulted is not retained. If you close the window, private browsing stops. On the other hand, if you add pages to your Favorites or download documents, these are saved in your computer’s memory.

Starting a private browsing session differs from one browser to another.

If you are using Firefox

  • Click on the “Open menu” button.
  • Click on “Private Window”.

If you use Internet Explorer

  • Click on the “Tools” button (nut icon, top right). A column appears.
  • Click on “Security” and select “InPrivate Browsing”.

If you use Google Chrome

  • Click on “Customize and control Google Chrome” (icon with 3 horizontal bars, top right)
  • Click on “New private browser window

To erase your tracks

If you don’t surf privately, you can still protect yourself by deleting your browsing history. Depending on your browser, the procedure for deleting your traces on the Web differs.

If you use Firefox

  • Click on the “Open menu” button.
  • Click on “History”.
    • Or click on “Delete recent history”. You can then choose the period of time to be deleted: the last hour, the last two hours, today… Or you can choose to delete everything. But don’t forget that by selecting “All history”, you’ll also be deleting the history of websites that other people have visited. This risks creating a blank cache. Confirm your choice with “Clear now”.
    • Or click on “Show history panel”. A window appears showing all the sites you’ve visited. You can right-click on the sites you wish to delete and click on “Delete this page”.

If you use Google Chrome

  • Click on “Customize and control Google Chrome” (icon with 3 horizontal bars, top right)
  • Click on “History”. A tab opens.
    • Click on “Clear browsing data”. But don’t forget that by doing this, you’ll also be deleting the history of websites other people have visited. This risks creating a blank cache.
    • Select the sites you’ve visited by clicking on them in the list that appears (this will allow you to check them off). Then click on “Delete selected items”.

If you use Safari

  • Click on “Tools” (nut icon, top right).
  • Click on “Reset Safari”. A window opens.
  • Check all the boxes and confirm by clicking on “Reset”. But don’t forget that by doing this, you’ll also be deleting the history of websites that other people have visited. This risks creating a blank cache.
